Changing a company’s health insurer needs a controlled transition. Compare medical benefits and member costs first, then confirm acceptance, commencement, previous cover recognition and the steps required for employees and dependants.
Dooley Insurance Group helps employers review suitable medical insurance options available through our agency appointments. We explain the relevant cover, funding choices and practical scheme requirements so the business can make an informed decision.
A plan with a similar premium can have a different hospital network, excess or procedure contribution. Prepare a benefit comparison that highlights both improvements and reductions. Equivalent existing cover and higher benefits may have different waiting-period treatment.
Agree a handover checklist with the insurers and the employer administrator. Membership data, contribution collection, cover start and end dates and employee communications should all align. Do not cancel the old arrangement until the replacement position is confirmed.
Members with treatment planned or underway should obtain individual confirmation through the insurer’s appropriate process. The employer should not promise a particular claim result based on a general scheme comparison.
A new proposal lowers the annual employer cost but changes the hospital network. Review the locations relevant to members, the personal excesses and any treatment already planned before accepting the switch.
This example illustrates the questions to resolve. It is not a quotation, an assurance that a scheme is available or a guarantee of medical benefits. The insurer’s terms and each member’s circumstances determine the position.
A useful comparison looks at the annual premium, the employer contribution and the amounts employees could pay when claiming. Check named hospitals, inpatient and day-case excesses, procedure-specific co-payments and limits on outpatient refunds.
Where included, GP, physiotherapy, diagnostic, maternity and mental health benefits can differ in their provider rules and annual limits. A benefit heading does not establish that every treatment or provider is covered.
An arrangement may be employer-funded, partly funded or available on a voluntary employee-paid basis, subject to insurer and scheme terms. Partner and child membership, upgrades and joining requirements should be agreed before an offer is communicated.
Company-paid medical insurance is generally a taxable Benefit-in-Kind. Payroll should use current Revenue rules, and employees may be entitled to claim Medical Insurance Relief. A contribution should not be described as tax-free without a confirmed basis.
First-time members, people returning after a break and people increasing cover may face waiting periods. Any waiver must be confirmed by the insurer. A business scheme does not automatically remove a member’s waiting periods or Lifetime Community Rating loading.
For an initial enquiry, an aggregate workforce summary is normally more useful than individual medical details. Any member-level information required later should be handled through the appropriate secure process. Employees should discuss personal medical and claim matters directly with the insurer.
Not simply because the insurer changes. Qualifying previous cover, any break, unfinished waiting periods and higher benefits need to be assessed.
Higher benefits can have upgrade waiting periods. Ask the insurer to confirm the treatment of the specific improvement.
No. Confirm replacement acceptance and commencement before ending the existing arrangement.
They should seek direct insurer confirmation for their circumstances through the appropriate secure process.

For an employer, compare hospital access near where employees live, not only the registered office. A team spread across Kildare, Dublin, Meath and other counties may need different regional access from a workforce based around one location.

Benefits, premiums, hospital access and waiting periods depend on the plan and individual circumstances. A review does not guarantee a saving or a particular claim outcome.
