Maternity and fertility benefits can make a meaningful contribution to eligible costs, but the details differ between plans. Compare what is insured, which providers can be used and when the benefit becomes available before choosing or upgrading cover.
Dooley Insurance Group helps individuals and couples review suitable Irish Life Health plans and available packages through our appointment. We explain the insurance options around your stated priorities while clinical decisions remain with your healthcare team.
Review eligible hospital accommodation, consultant charges and any antenatal, scan or postnatal benefits. Establish the amount the insurer contributes and ask the care provider to explain any personal shortfall.
A private-room benefit does not guarantee that a private room will be available. A maternity consultant benefit also should not be assumed to pay every outpatient consultation, scan or optional service. Check the benefit schedule and applicable provider arrangements.
| Area | Questions to check |
|---|---|
| Hospital maternity cover | Which accommodation and eligible inpatient consultant services are included? |
| Antenatal and postnatal expenses | Which visits, scans and supports qualify, and what contribution is available? |
| Fertility assessment | Are consultations or specified tests covered, and must a preferred provider be used? |
| Fertility treatment | Does a named IVF, IUI or ICSI benefit apply, with what cap and frequency? |
| Fertility preservation | Is a separate egg- or sperm-freezing benefit included, and on what terms? |
Some Irish Life Health packages include contributions towards specified fertility tests, treatment or preservation services. The eligible service, percentage contribution and maximum payment can differ. A benefit may have a lifetime limit rather than renewing in the same way as an everyday expense allowance.
For example, the published Fertility Extra package for 4D Health 1 lists a contribution towards IVF, IUI and ICSI subject to a stated percentage, cap and twice-per-lifetime limit. That is an example of a specific package, not a promise that all plans fund those procedures.
Confirm how the package is selected, whether it is available with the proposed plan and when it takes effect. A package description is not a substitute for reading the relevant benefit table and handbook.
Maternity benefits can have a 52-week waiting period when joining or moving to higher maternity benefits. The insurer should confirm the benefit that will apply to your circumstances and dates.
Fertility services can have their own eligibility and waiting-period treatment. Do not assume that every fertility benefit follows exactly the same rules as maternity, or that upgrading after an investigation starts guarantees payment.
Where care is already planned, obtain confirmation for the proposed treatment, provider and date before relying on the policy. Ask about any pre-authorisation process and keep the response with your records.
Not necessarily. One partner’s maternity or fertility priorities may differ from the other person’s hospital or outpatient requirements. Review each member and confirm which insured person can claim a particular benefit.
Do not assume the same expense can be claimed twice because both partners have relevant benefits. The insurer should confirm the claim route, member eligibility and any shared or lifetime limit.
After birth or adoption, contact the insurer promptly to add the child. A parent’s maternity benefits do not automatically prove the newborn is enrolled.
Ask about the effective date, infant joining rules, paediatric benefits and the child’s ongoing premium. Review the family arrangement again when the actual membership changes.
No. Check the eligible services, contribution, provider terms and any personal balance.
No. A specific benefit may contribute towards named services subject to limits. The insurer must confirm the position.
A policy change does not necessarily provide the higher benefit for that pregnancy. Ask the insurer about the applicable waiting period and benefit level.
Yes. Provide the current plan and relevant priorities so we can assess suitable options within our Irish Life Health appointment.
