Health Insurance Broker vs Direct: Premiums, Advice and Claims Support

Health insurance broker or direct: compare the cover and the support

Choosing health insurance is about more than completing a quote. You need to understand the hospital network, personal claim costs and benefits that matter to you, then know where to turn when a renewal, procedure or outpatient claim raises a question.

Dooley Insurance Group offers a dedicated health insurance contact for individuals, families and employers. Aisling and the team help you review existing cover, discuss current and future priorities and assess suitable Irish Life Health options within our appointment.

What happens to the premium when you use a broker?

The insurer premium and any broker service charge are separate items. For the same plan, members, start date and pricing conditions, the underlying insurer premium can be the same whether cover is arranged directly or through a broker. Different discounts or purchase terms must still be checked.

Dooleys explains any applicable service charge separately before you proceed. Compare the complete quotation rather than assuming that either route is always cheaper or that identical plan names automatically establish an identical total cost.

Our published charges information and Terms of Business explain the basis of our service and remuneration.

A review based on your needs and our available plans

Bring your current plan and renewal notice, and tell us what you want your insurance to provide. We can compare those benefits with suitable options available through our Irish Life Health appointment, identify important differences and explain what a proposed change would mean.

Our current Terms of Business describes health insurance advice on a limited-analysis basis. That is the scope of the recommendation, rather than a claim to arrange every insurer’s products. The HIA provides independent public information about the wider health insurance market.

Corporate plans deserve a closer look

A plan called corporate, company or PMI may be worth considering alongside other available options. Do not judge its suitability from the label. Hospital access, excesses, outpatient benefits and the relevant pricing terms still need to be compared.

Corporate-labelled cover is not automatically exclusive to brokers or large employers. Ask us to identify suitable plans available through our appointment and explain their purchase terms, rather than assuming a corporate name guarantees a discount or superior benefits.

Help before a planned procedure

If you have a procedure planned, Dooleys can assist with the pre-authorisation enquiry and help you understand what details the insurer needs. The hospital, consultant, procedure and proposed date may all be relevant.

The insurer confirms authorisation and cover under the policy. A broker cannot approve a medical claim on the insurer’s behalf. Obtain that confirmation before relying on payment, including any excess, co-payment or other personal contribution.

Support with outpatient claims

We can help explain the outpatient claim process, the benefit category to check and the supporting documents the insurer requests. Retain suitable receipts and keep track of the policy year and relevant limits.

A contribution towards a visit does not mean the full bill is refundable. We can help you understand the process and raise an enquiry, while the insurer applies its policy rules and determines the claim outcome.

What a dedicated health insurance contact adds

  • A named person to discuss your existing plan and renewal.
  • A structured review of your family or workforce priorities.
  • Clear explanations of benefits, restrictions and personal costs.
  • Assistance with cover enquiries and pre-authorisation requests.
  • Guidance on outpatient claim administration.
  • A direct phone and email route for health insurance questions during normal service hours.

Frequently asked questions

Does a broker guarantee a lower premium?

No. Compare the actual insurer quotation and any separate service charge. The benefit of advice also includes understanding the cover and receiving support.

Does Dooleys arrange every insurer’s health plans?

Our current Terms of Business lists limited-analysis health insurance advice through Irish Life Health. We explain that scope before making a recommendation.

Can you pre-authorise my treatment?

We can help with the request and insurer enquiry. The insurer provides the actual authorisation and confirms the applicable benefit.

Who is my dedicated contact?
