Accountancy and bookkeeping practices often combine partners, qualified staff, trainees and part-time support. A staff health insurance review should define who is included and how the contribution works across that mix. It is also an opportunity to make a benefit easier to explain to recruits without creating an administration task during filing deadlines.
Dooley Insurance Group helps employers review suitable medical insurance options available through our agency appointments. We explain the relevant cover, funding choices and practical scheme requirements so the business can make an informed decision.
Partners and employees may have different contractual or funding arrangements. Keep those distinctions explicit and obtain payroll or tax advice where needed. A trainee’s previous family cover should be checked before joining, while a retiring partner may need a personal continuation arrangement.
A practice recruits several graduates and is approaching a partner retirement. Its review should address the new members’ previous insurance, the departing partner’s continuation and a contribution policy that remains clear for the existing team.
This example illustrates the questions to resolve. It is not a quotation, an assurance that a scheme is available or a guarantee of medical benefits. The insurer’s terms and each member’s circumstances determine the position.
A useful comparison looks at the annual premium, the employer contribution and the amounts employees could pay when claiming. Check named hospitals, inpatient and day-case excesses, procedure-specific co-payments and limits on outpatient refunds.
Where included, GP, physiotherapy, diagnostic, maternity and mental health benefits can differ in their provider rules and annual limits. A benefit heading does not establish that every treatment or provider is covered.
An arrangement may be employer-funded, partly funded or available on a voluntary employee-paid basis, subject to insurer and scheme terms. Partner and child membership, upgrades and joining requirements should be agreed before an offer is communicated.
Company-paid medical insurance is generally a taxable Benefit-in-Kind. Payroll should use current Revenue rules, and employees may be entitled to claim Medical Insurance Relief. A contribution should not be described as tax-free without a confirmed basis.
First-time members, people returning after a break and people increasing cover may face waiting periods. Any waiver must be confirmed by the insurer. A business scheme does not automatically remove a member’s waiting periods or Lifetime Community Rating loading.
For an initial enquiry, an aggregate workforce summary is normally more useful than individual medical details. Any member-level information required later should be handled through the appropriate secure process. Employees should discuss personal medical and claim matters directly with the insurer.
The insurer must confirm the available structure. Funding and tax treatment may differ, so the practice should check these with its adviser.
Not automatically. A core arrangement may be useful, but age-related rates, previous cover and available upgrade choices should be explained.
The arrangement may allow dependant membership. Eligibility, available plans and who pays the extra premium must be confirmed.
Provide your workforce summary, contribution budget and renewal details if a scheme exists. Do not send employee medical records with an initial enquiry.

For an employer, compare hospital access near where employees live, not only the registered office. A team spread across Kildare, Dublin, Meath and other counties may need different regional access from a workforce based around one location.

Benefits, premiums, hospital access and waiting periods depend on the plan and individual circumstances. A review does not guarantee a saving or a particular claim outcome.
