Adding drivers to your insurance policy

When adding drivers to your policy there are a few factors that need to be taken into account: age, gender, relationship to you, driving experience and claims experience are all relevant. Dooley Insurance Group is here to help you decide what the best options are for you.

Adding a named driver to your insurance policy could increase or decrease your premium dependent on who the extra person is.

  • Car insurance may increase with the addition of a young inexperienced driver to their parent’s policy. This is because, in general, younger inexperienced drivers have higher claims and are a high risk group for accidents.
  • However, a younger driver could save money by adding a parent to their policy as a named driver. The overall risk is seen as lower, making it likely for your insurance premium to decrease.
  • Men who add their spouse to their insurance policy can also see a significant decrease in their premiums as claims in this group are generally lower.
  • Named drivers also benefit in the long run. Many insurers take named driver experience into account when they get quotes for their own motor insurance policies.

Keep in mind if someone already owns a car they may already be covered by their own insurance policy to driver other cars with comprehensive cover. This could mean you don’t need to add them to your policy for them to drive your car.
